New Aldi at Alexandra Hospital in Redditch

Plans for a New ALDI supermarket in Redditch will help fund health-related improvements at the Alexandra Hospital

Hinton Group, in collaboration with The Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust (The Trust), is bringing forward proposals for a new Aldi supermarket, at land between Quinneys Lane and Woodrow Drive at The Alexandra Hospital site in Redditch. The proposed 0.7 hectare site comprises the sloped grassed land at the entrance to The Alexandra Hospital estate and is not currently used for any healthcare or ancillary services and has therefore been identified as surplus to healthcare requirements by The Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust. In accordance with the NHS property disposal policy, all the proceeds from the sale of this surplus site will be reinvested by The Trust in future developments at The Alexandra Hospital Site. The Trust is currently developing a number of plans to expand and improve services at The Alexandra Hospital Site.

Hinton Group will also work in partnership with The Trust to make sure that there is no loss of parking spaces for patients, visitors or staff. We will make sure that replacement parking spaces are available before any current parking space is lost as a result of the development.

The disposal of the site will therefore directly fund health-related improvements in Redditch, providing significant public benefits to the healthcare system and the associated food store proposals will deliver increased food shopping choice for local residents. The new Aldi supermarket will comprise a 19,500 sq. ft. store, 111 parking spaces as well as 8 ultra-rapid electric vehicle charging spaces. The new store will also create hundreds of new jobs and represents a significant economic investment in Redditch, which will:

  • Meet the shopping needs of local residents in a convenient and accessible location on a key arterial route with easy access from the Birmingham Road A435 and Alcester Highway A44, encouraging sustainable travel
  • Provide a convenient opportunity for NHS staff, patients, and visitors to shop in conjunction with their journey to and from the hospital and during breaks throughout the day
  • Create up to 50 new jobs across a range of roles and levels
  • Introduce 8x ultra-rapid charging points for electric vehicles, provided within the car park by Motor Fuel Group (MFG), the largest independent forecourt operator in the UK
  • Introduce community initiatives through Aldi’s food surplus redistribution programme and healthy kids initiatives
Matthew Hopkins, Chief Executive of Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “Our plans to further expand and improve services and facilities at the Alexandra Hospital include the introduction later this year of robotic-assisted surgery and, longer-term, the development of a new operating theatre complex. These plans will require a significant amount of capital investment. Having additional funding available from the sale of land which is surplus to our requirements will enable us to deliver further improvements at the Alexandra for the benefit of our patients and our teams.
